Key Facts
| Program | 8171 Web Portal (BISP) |
|---|---|
| Jurisdiction | Pakistan (Federal) |
| Official status check | https://8171.bisp.gov.pk/ |
The 8171 web portal has one job: it matches a CNIC number to a household record in the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER) and says whether that household is eligible for BISP support. It sits at 8171.bisp.gov.pk, its screens are in Urdu, and it asks for two things only: a CNIC number and the code shown in an image.
Because the portal is simple, copies of it are everywhere, and most misunderstandings about BISP start with expecting it to do things it cannot do. This page explains what each part of the portal means, how to read its answer, what messages such as the 933 error are telling you, and how to recognise a fake. For the checking steps themselves, see our eligibility and status guide.
What you need before you open it
You need the 13-digit CNIC number of the woman of the household, and a phone or computer with an internet connection. That is all. The portal has no accounts, no passwords and no fee, and there is no app you must install. If any page claiming to be the 8171 portal asks for more than a CNIC and an image code, it is not the portal.
The portal’s screens are in Urdu. If you cannot read Urdu, you lose nothing by using the SMS check described below instead. It reads the same record, and its reply states the same status.
Using the portal, step by step
- Type the address yourself: 8171.bisp.gov.pk. Do not arrive through a link in a WhatsApp message or a video description, because those links can lead anywhere.
- In the first field, labelled CNIC number (شناختی کارڈ نمبر), enter the 13-digit number.
- In the second field, labelled the code given in the image (تصویر میں دیا گیا کوڈ), type the characters shown in the picture exactly as they appear.
- Press the submit button and wait for the result.
- Read the result as a statement about the household record attached to that CNIC, not as a payment promise.
If the image code is rejected, the picture changes. Copy the new code carefully and try again. Most failures are a mistyped character.
What the result says, and what it leaves out
The result tells you whether the household is recorded in the NSER and whether it is currently eligible under BISP’s assessment. Behind that answer sits the household’s PMT score, calculated from the survey record. The qualifying line is a score of 32 or below, or 37 or below when a household member has a disability.
The portal never displays the score. Neither does the SMS reply. Families often assume the number must be hidden somewhere on the page or behind another menu. It is not there. Your exact score can only be told to you by staff at a BISP Tehsil Office.
The result also says nothing about payment dates. Eligibility and payment are separate steps, and payment schedules are announced separately by BISP, so an eligible result today does not mean cash today. What an eligible household receives is Rs 14,500 per quarter under Benazir Kafaalat, which the BISP payment calculator breaks down. The programme itself is described on our Benazir Kafaalat scheme page.
Whose CNIC to enter
Enter the CNIC of the woman of the household. BISP keeps its records by household, and Kafaalat is paid to the woman, so her CNIC is the one tied to the record that matters. Entering the CNIC of a husband, son or brother may return no record at all, or a record that is not the one a payment would follow.
If you are helping an elderly mother or a neighbour who cannot use a phone comfortably, you can type the number for her. The answer is still about her household, and she should keep any note you make of it. Never pay a shopkeeper or an agent to run this check. It takes two minutes and costs nothing.
When a result changes
A portal answer is a snapshot of the record as it stands today, and records are not frozen. When a household’s details are updated through the dynamic registry, after a fresh survey, a correction at the Tehsil Office, or a re-assessment, the answer at the next check can change with them.
This cuts both ways. A family refused last year should check again once its record has been updated. A family found eligible should not treat one result as permanent either. If your result has changed and you do not know why, the Tehsil Office can look at the record and explain. Nobody else can.

The SMS check reads the same record
If you have no internet, send the 13-digit CNIC number, without dashes, by SMS to 8171. The reply states the same household’s status, because both channels look at the same NSER record.
SMS replies are short, and sometimes they arrive as codes or compressed lines that are hard to interpret. The 8171 reply decoder explains the common replies in plain language. If the portal and an SMS reply ever seem to disagree, do not pay anyone to investigate. The record itself, which the Tehsil Office can show you, is what decides.
Common messages and problems
The 933 error
A 933 error means the household’s NSER record is incomplete. The portal reports the problem but cannot repair it. Completing the record happens at a BISP Tehsil Office, with the original CNIC, as described in our BISP registration guide.
Not surveyed, or no record found
Your household is not in the NSER yet, so there is nothing for the portal to check. The remedy is the in-person Dynamic Survey at the Tehsil Office. No website can create the record for you.
Not eligible
Your household’s score is above the qualifying line. The portal does not say by how much. If your circumstances have changed since the survey, or the record contains mistakes, the office can review the record with you and tell you the exact score.
The CNIC entry is rejected
Count the digits. The number must be the full 13-digit CNIC. A missing digit, an extra digit, or two digits swapped is the usual cause of an entry being rejected or matched to no record. Type it slowly from the card itself rather than from memory.
The portal will not open
If the page will not load or a check keeps failing, wait and try again later, or use the SMS check, which reads the same record and works without internet.
What the portal cannot do
The portal does not register families. Registration and surveys happen in person through the dynamic registry, covered in the registration guide.
It does not change your data. Corrections to a survey record are made by office staff, with you present.
It takes no money and moves no money. It never asks for a fee, a mobile one-time code, bank details, a PIN or a password. A page that asks for any of these is a fake wearing the portal’s design.
Nothing is issued or downloaded from the portal either. It reports a status and nothing more. Any site offering a BISP card, certificate or approval letter to download in exchange for details or money is inventing a document that does not exist.
Recognising the real portal
The only official address is 8171.bisp.gov.pk, and BISP’s main website is bisp.gov.pk. Lookalike sites use similar names and the same colours to harvest CNIC numbers, which are then used for scams. Type the address yourself, every time.
BISP sends its messages from 8171 only. If you are unsure about a result or a message, the BISP helpline 0800-26477 is free. And if you want an idea of where your household stands before using the official check, the BISP eligibility checker gives an indication based on your situation. The portal’s answer is the one that counts.

How often should you check
Checking every day does not change anything. Your result only moves when the record underneath it moves, and that happens in just a few situations.
Check once after completing a survey, and give the record time to be processed before worrying. BISP does not publish a fixed number of days for this, and office staff cannot speed it up. If a month passes and the check still shows no record, go back to the Tehsil Office with the CNIC and ask whether the survey was entered at all. That visit is also the answer when a correction was made and the portal still shows the old result: corrections are saved at the office first and reach the portal after processing.
Check again during a payment cycle if you are eligible, because a household can be eligible in one quarter and flagged for re-verification in another. And check after any big change in the family: a death, a marriage, a new disability, or a move to another district. Those events change what the survey should say, and a re-survey is how the new facts enter the record.
Checking for a family member, and keeping the record safe
You can run the check for your mother, wife or another close family member if they ask you to and give you the CNIC number. The result belongs to the woman whose record it is. Payments, when they come, are collected by her, in person, with her own thumbprint. Nobody can collect on her behalf, whatever an agent promises.
Treat the CNIC number itself with care. A result page plus a CNIC copy is enough material for several common scams, so do not send screenshots of results to agents, shopkeepers or strangers on WhatsApp. If someone needs proof of your status, show the official result on your own phone, in person, and keep the phone in your hand.
Popular Questions
Does the 8171 portal register new families?
The portal is an eligibility/status check. Registration and surveys are handled through BISP tehsil offices and the dynamic registry process.
Why does the portal ask for an image code?
The code in the image confirms you are a person, not automated software. Type exactly the characters shown.
Can I see my PMT score on the portal?
No. The portal only shows eligible or not eligible. Your exact PMT score is available only at a BISP Tehsil Office.
What does the 933 error mean?
It means your NSER record is incomplete. Take your original CNIC to a BISP Tehsil Office and the staff will complete the record. The portal and SMS cannot fix it.
Do I need an account or password for the portal?
No. The portal needs only your CNIC number and the code shown in the image. Any page asking for a password, OTP or bank details is not the official portal.
