You have applied, you have a receipt or a tracking number, and now you are waiting. The checking itself is easy once you know where to look. There is no single government tracking website for everything. BISP, NADRA, the Punjab housing scheme and the Kissan Card each run their own system, and each one asks for a different reference. This guide covers the main ones, explains what the result actually means in plain words, and then deals with the errors that make a working check look broken.

Before you start: what you need

Have your application acknowledgement or receipt in front of you. The reference you need is printed on it, usually at the top: a tracking ID or application number for document applications, or simply your CNIC number for welfare programmes like BISP. If you applied online, the same reference appears in the confirmation message and inside your account on that service.

Use the mobile number you gave in the application where a service sends confirmations. Keep a screenshot of every result, with the date visible. If you ever need to visit an office or call a helpline, that dated screenshot settles most arguments about what the system showed and when.

BISP: check through 8171

BISP offers two free ways to check, and both take under two minutes.

The web portal is at 8171.bisp.gov.pk. Type the address yourself rather than tapping a link someone forwarded to you. Enter your 13-digit CNIC number as digits only, with no dashes and no spaces, then type the code shown in the picture and submit. The portal replies with your household’s current position: registered and eligible, under verification, or not eligible under the current survey.

The SMS method works on any phone. Write your CNIC number, again digits only, in a text message and send it to 8171. The reply arrives from 8171 itself. If the reply’s wording confuses you, paste it into our 8171 reply decoder and it will explain the message line by line.

Two honest limits are worth knowing. First, the portal shows whether you are eligible; it never shows your exact PMT score, whatever a local agent claims. Second, “record not found” and “not eligible” are different results. No record means your household is missing from the NSER survey database, and that is fixed through a BISP office survey, not online. If you want to understand the criteria behind the result before checking, work through our BISP eligibility and status check guide and the BISP eligibility checker, then read the full programme details on the Benazir Kafaalat scheme page.

NADRA applications: SMS and PakID

For a NADRA identity document, the quickest check needs no internet at all. Send your application’s tracking ID in an SMS to 8400, and NADRA replies with the current status of that application. This works for applications submitted at a NADRA centre as well as online ones, as long as you have the tracking ID from your token or receipt.

If you applied through PakID, you can also track inside your account after logging in on the official service, where each application shows its stage. Our separate guide on how to track a NADRA application explains each stage, from submitted to printed and dispatched, and what to carry when you collect the card.

Punjab schemes: AZAG and the Kissan Card

Applications for Apni Zameen Apna Ghar (AZAG), the Punjab government’s free 3-marla plot scheme, are checked on its own portal at azag.punjab.gov.pk, using the reference given when you applied. District quota and balloting stages mean a status can sit unchanged for a while during scrutiny; that is the process working, not a rejection.

The Punjab Kissan Card starts with an SMS: send “PKC” followed by your CNIC number to 8070. The reply confirms whether your registration was received. Keep that reply. It is your earliest proof of registration if a later stage is ever disputed.

What the status words actually mean

Portals use short labels, and the same label can hide a long wait. Here is what the common ones mean in practice.

Received or submitted: your application is in the system and waiting in queue. Nothing is wrong.

Under process or under verification: staff or the system are checking your details against records, for BISP the NSER data, for NADRA your existing identity record. Most applications spend most of their time here.

Approved: the decision is made in your favour. For payments, the amount is released in phases by district, so approval and cash in hand are not the same day.

Dispatched or printed: used for documents. The card or letter has been produced and is moving to you or to the centre named in the status.

Objection or returned: something needs a correction from you, usually a document or a record mismatch. Read the instruction shown with the status and act on that, not on advice from a shopkeeper or agent.

When the status does not move for weeks

Programmes process applications in batches, often district by district, and a survey or balloting round can hold thousands of files at the same stage. A status that stays “under process” for several weeks is common and is not, by itself, a rejection.

Check once a week rather than ten times a day. If the status has genuinely not changed for a long period, use the official channel: for BISP, the free helpline is 0800-26477. For an office visit, carry your original CNIC, the acknowledgement receipt and your dated screenshots. Staff can see internal remarks that the public status never shows.

Problems that make a working check fail

The most common failure is the CNIC itself. The 8171 portal and most SMS services want the 13 digits with no dashes. A number typed as 35202-1234567-1 will be rejected or return “invalid” even though the CNIC is correct.

Captcha codes cause the second most failures. Type the picture code slowly, exactly as shown, including capital letters where they appear. If two attempts fail, reload the page to get a fresh code instead of guessing at a blurred one; repeated wrong entries can lock the check for a while.

Portals slow down badly in the days after a payment or scheme announcement, when lakhs of people check at once. An expired session or a page that never finishes loading at 8 in the evening often works on the first try early in the morning. Finish a check in one sitting rather than leaving a half-filled form open.

A name mismatch is a different kind of problem. If the portal says your details do not match, compare the spelling with your CNIC. The form cannot fix the record underneath it; only the issuing authority can correct that, and until it does, every portal fed by that record will keep objecting.

Keep the check safe

Every check in this guide is free, and every official service named here sits on a government address. A page that asks for a fee, a password, or a one-time code sent to your phone is not the official service, however real it looks. Never send a photo of your CNIC, an OTP or a password to an agent, a WhatsApp number or a social media page offering to “confirm” your status. Your CNIC number plus a tracking reference is enough for a stranger to interfere with your application, so share both only with family you trust.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1 Identify the issuing department

Your application acknowledgement names the department and program. Tracking always happens on that department's own portal, never on a general website.

Expected result: You know the exact department and program name.

2 Open the official portal only

Type the official address yourself or follow the source links in our guides. For BISP it is 8171.bisp.gov.pk; for NADRA applications it is the official PakID service.

Expected result: The address bar shows the genuine government domain (.gov.pk or the verified portal).

3 Enter the reference the portal asks for

Enter your tracking ID, application number or CNIC exactly as issued. Never enter an OTP shared by someone else, and never pay for a status check.

Expected result: The portal displays your current application stage.

4 Save the result

Take a screenshot of the result page showing the date and status for your own record, and note the helpline shown on the official site for follow-up.

Expected result: You have a dated record of the status you saw.

Popular Questions

A website offers to check my status for Rs. 200. Should I pay?

No. Official status checks are free. Paid checkers are a common fraud pattern.

How can I check my BISP status without internet?

Send your 13-digit CNIC number, without dashes, in an SMS to 8171. The reply tells you whether your household is registered and eligible. The SIM you send from does not need a data package.

The 8171 portal says my record was not found. What does that mean?

It usually means your household has no record in the NSER survey database, which is different from being found ineligible. Registration and survey updates are handled at BISP offices, not through the portal.

The portal shows my poverty (PMT) score. Is that real?

No. The 8171 portal shows whether you are eligible; it does not display your exact PMT score. Anyone offering to reveal your score for a fee is misleading you.

Can I check the status of a family member's application?

You can run the same free check with their CNIC or tracking reference if they ask you to. Never hand their CNIC copy or reference to an agent or post it publicly.
